History of Friends of Diabetes Sierra Leone

Friends of Diabetes Sierra Leone (FoDSL) was established in 2013 by the founder of the organization Mrs. Salome Hydes, who was born in Sierra Leone. For many years Mrs. Salome Hydes, lived and worked in the United Kingdom, she qualified with a Teacher's Certificate from Bo district Teacher's College in Sierra Leone in 1986 and was confirmed a Registered Nurse (Mental Health) in the UK in 2005. Mrs. Salome Hydes volunteered for Diabetes UK and she is a Diabetes Community Champion for Southwark and Lambeth Councils. She shares her time between London and Sierra Leone.

SalomeSalome Hydes has built Friends of Diabetes Sierra Leone through her passion for alleviating people's suffering from Diabetes and her ability to connect with people from all walks of life and cultures. Every year, Friends of Diabetes Sierra Leone hosts World Diabetes Day and has done so, since the organization's establishment. During the commemoration of World Diabetes Day Friends of Diabetes Sierra Leone provides health education talks on preventive measures to control diabetes and reversal of type 2, conducts screening to identify pre-diabetes patients, and provides consultation and patient referrals, furthermore, the Friends of Diabetes Sierra Leone outreach team facilitates outreach sessions across the western area urban and koinadugu district, at various local communities targeting women, children include school going children, pregnant women and the general populace. With this Friends of Diabetes Sierra Leone reached 5,108 patients since 2013 on health education talks, screening, and testing for diabetes. Every last Saturday of each month, Friends of Diabetes Sierra Leone hosts a one-day meeting with Friends of Diabetes Sierra Leone members, where members' blood sugar levels, and blood pressure are checked and weighed the members, whilst facilitating a health talks.
